B2B Industrial Product Titanium Alloy Bar

Titanium Grade 5 Bar for Automotive & Motorsport

Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400) is a high-strength alpha-beta titanium alloy supplied as bar and machining stock for selected automotive, motorsport, prototype, and performance-engineering components. Its combination of low density, strength, fatigue potential, machinability, and corrosion resistance can be valuable where component-level weight reduction and performance justify the additional material, processing, inspection, and qualification cost. Emily PIPE supplies Grade 5 round bars, rods, cut lengths, billets, and drawing-specific machining blanks for fasteners, shafts, pins, retainers, brackets, connectors, suspension hardware, engine hardware, and other precision components. Final suitability should be reviewed against the governing material specification, drawing, static and cyclic loads, temperature, wear, galling, corrosion, joining method, inspection plan, and vehicle or motorsport approval requirements.

Product Introduction

Built for Global Industrial Procurement

Item Details
Page Purpose and Product Position

This page covers Titanium Grade 5 bar supplied for selected automotive, motorsport, prototype, and performance-engineering components. It is an application-focused page rather than a replacement for the general Titanium Grade 5 Bar main product page.

Grade 5 bar should be evaluated where low density, high strength, fatigue performance, corrosion resistance, and machining capability justify its higher material and processing cost. It is not a universal substitute for steel, aluminum, or other titanium grades.

Material Identification

1. Material: Titanium Grade 5.

2. Alloy: Ti-6Al-4V.

3. UNS Designation: UNS R56400.

4. Product Form: Solid titanium bar, rod, billet, cut length, and machining blank.

5. Primary Industrial Bar Standard: ASTM B348/B348M-25, or the contractually specified edition.

6. Aerospace Material Option: AMS4928 may be reviewed only when the exact revision, approved source, tests, and customer requirements are specified.

7. Automotive Boundary: ASTM B348 or AMS4928 material compliance does not by itself approve a finished automotive component.

Mechanical Properties (Annealed Reference)

For annealed ASTM B348 Grade 5 bar below the applicable size threshold, commonly referenced minimum room-temperature values include:

Property Reference Minimum
Ultimate Tensile Strength Approximately 895 MPa
0.2% Yield Strength Approximately 828 MPa
Elongation Approximately 10%
Reduction of Area Approximately 25%

Actual requirements depend on diameter or thickness, orientation, condition, standard edition, and customer specification. Fatigue strength, impact energy, creep, elevated-temperature strength, and hardness should not be treated as universal acceptance values unless specifically required and tested.

Typical Physical Properties

Typical technical references only; they are not ASTM product-acceptance limits.

Property Typical Value
Density Approximately 4.42–4.43 g/cm³
Melting Range Approximately 1630–1660°C
Thermal Conductivity at Room Temperature Approximately 6.6 W/m·K
Young’s Modulus at Room Temperature Approximately 107–122 GPa
Poisson’s Ratio Approximately 0.31

Properties vary with composition, product direction, heat treatment, thermomechanical history, and test temperature.

Why Automotive and Motorsport Engineers Consider Grade 5 Bar

1. Low Density with High Strength: Grade 5 can reduce component mass relative to many steel and nickel-alloy designs when stiffness, geometry, fatigue, wear, and cost are addressed through component-specific engineering.

2. Machining Stock for High-Load Parts: Bar can be converted into shafts, pins, fasteners, retainers, spacers, brackets, fittings, and other precision-machined parts.

3. Corrosion Resistance: Ti-6Al-4V offers useful resistance in many atmospheric, road-salt, moisture, and compatible fluid environments, but it is not resistant to every automotive chemical.

4. Fatigue Potential: Properly designed and processed Grade 5 components can provide useful cyclic performance. Surface defects, threads, notches, fretting, bends, residual stress, and machining damage remain critical.

5. Performance Applications: The alloy is most relevant where weight reduction and performance justify higher raw-material, machining, inspection, and qualification costs.

Selected Automotive and Motorsport Components

Grade 5 bar may be evaluated for:

1. High-strength fastener blanks, studs, bolts, nuts, and threaded hardware.

2. Valve spring retainers, valve-related machined parts, and selected engine hardware.

3. Shafts, pins, pivots, spacers, bushings, connectors, and link components.

4. Suspension and steering hardware where fatigue, wear, stiffness, and joint design are validated.

5. Brake-system or wheel-related hardware where temperature, galling, torque, fatigue, and approval requirements are satisfied.

6. Lightweight brackets, mounts, clamps, and precision-machined supports.

7. Prototype, limited-production, racing, and high-performance vehicle components made to controlled drawings.

8. Custom machined components requiring Grade 5 bar under a customer or motorsport specification.

These are screening examples. The final component manufacturer remains responsible for design, qualification, testing, and regulatory or vehicle-program approval.

Applications That Require Extra Caution

Grade 5 bar should not automatically be promoted for:

1. Roll cages, crash beams, roof rails, or primary crash-energy structures without vehicle-level crash design and validation.

2. Turbocharger turbine wheels, exhaust hot sections, catalytic shells, or other prolonged high-temperature parts without an alloy- and temperature-specific review.

3. Coil springs, pressure tubing, exhaust tubing, or sheet-metal structures when the required product form is not bar.

4. Safety-critical steering, braking, suspension, or rotating components without fatigue, fracture, wear, joint, and proof testing.

5. Components exposed to fluorides, strong reducing acids, severe fretting, poor lubrication, or incompatible galvanic couples without testing.

6. Direct replacement of steel parts without redesign for titanium’s lower elastic modulus, galling behaviour, thermal properties, and joining requirements.

Grade 5 Bar vs Alternative Materials
Material Option Possible Advantage Buyer Review
High-Strength Steel Lower raw-material cost, higher stiffness, established mass-production routes. Weight, corrosion protection, fatigue, and maintenance.
Aluminum Alloys Lower density and easier high-volume processing in many components. Strength, temperature, wear, fatigue, and joint design.
Titanium Grade 5 High specific strength, corrosion resistance, and performance-oriented machining stock. Cost, stiffness, galling, machining, inspection, and qualification.
Titanium Grade 9 Greater cold-forming capability for tubing and some formed products. Lower strength than Grade 5 and different product specifications.
Nickel Alloys Stronger performance in certain high-temperature and corrosive environments. Higher density, cost, machining, and service-specific selection.
Temperature and Exhaust-System Boundary

Grade 5 retains useful properties at elevated temperatures, but no single temperature limit applies to every automotive component.

Allowable service depends on duration, stress, atmosphere, oxidation, creep, thermal cycling, section size, heat treatment, surface condition, and safety factor. Generic claims such as “maintains full properties to 500°C” or “cannot deform under exhaust heat” should not be used.

Exhaust tubes and shells also require the correct tube or sheet product standard rather than an ASTM B348 bar specification.

Fatigue, Fretting, Wear, and Galling

Automotive and motorsport components can face repeated loading, vibration, shock, threaded contact, sliding contact, and limited lubrication.

Important controls include:

1. Smooth transition radii and reduced stress concentration.

2. Controlled machining marks and surface damage.

3. Suitable thread form, rolled or cut-thread requirements, and inspection.

4. Surface treatment, coating, lubricant, or dissimilar-material strategy where galling is possible.

5. Fretting assessment at joints, splines, clamps, and bearing interfaces.

6. Representative fatigue testing for safety-critical or new component designs.

7. Final inspection after machining, heat treatment, coating, or assembly.

Machining and Surface Processing

Grade 5 requires rigid workholding, sharp tooling, controlled cutting speed, suitable feed, and adequate coolant because heat can concentrate near the cutting edge.

Available processing can include, subject to review:

1. Saw cutting and fixed-length preparation.

2. Facing, chamfering, drilling, threading, turning, milling, and CNC machining.

3. Peeled, rough-turned, centerless-ground, or polished surface conditions.

4. First-article dimensional inspection and drawing-controlled machining.

5. Customer-specified surface treatment or coating coordination.

Surface roughness, machining allowance, edge breaks, thread requirements, datum structure, and final inspection method should be defined on the drawing.

Heat Treatment and Property Customization

ASTM B348 Grade 5 bar is generally supplied annealed. Solution treatment, aging, stress relief, and other thermal processing can change strength, ductility, fracture behaviour, fatigue, residual stress, and microstructure.

No generic heat-treatment cycle should be applied merely to “increase hardness.” A qualified procedure should account for original condition, section size, furnace control, atmosphere, quenching, distortion, machining sequence, and required final properties.

Any heat treatment performed after mill certification may require new testing and customer approval.

Dimensions, Tolerances, and Supply Forms

1. Round bar, rod, billet, fixed lengths, cut pieces, and machining blanks can be reviewed.

2. Diameter, length, straightness, out-of-roundness, surface condition, and cut-end requirements should follow ASTM B348/B348M or the agreed drawing.

3. Tighter-than-standard tolerances require a feasibility review covering production route, finish, measurement method, uncertainty, yield, cost, and lead time.

4. Custom diameters and lengths are subject to mill capability, raw-material availability, quantity, condition, and inspection requirements.

5. The RFQ should distinguish raw bar dimensions from finished-component tolerances.

Automotive Qualification and Certification Boundary

Material compliance, supplier quality-system certification, and finished-component approval are separate issues.

1. ASTM B348 confirms bar requirements when the material is ordered and tested to that standard.

2. AMS4928 applies only when explicitly required and supported by the correct revision, source, tests, and documentation.

3. IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, AS9100, NADCAP, or an OEM approval should not be claimed unless the supplying organization and process genuinely hold the required current approval.

4. ISO 9001 supports quality-management review but does not replace material testing, PPAP, first-article inspection, fatigue validation, or customer release.

5. Automotive production programs may require PPAP, control plans, FMEA, process capability, change control, records retention, and approved sub-suppliers beyond the bar material specification.

Inspection and Quality Control

Inspection can be arranged according to the governing standard and purchase order, including:

1. Heat-specific chemical composition and tensile properties.

2. Diameter, length, straightness, surface, and other agreed dimensional checks.

3. Positive Material Identification when specified.

4. Ultrasonic testing when the method, reference standard, calibration, coverage, sensitivity, and acceptance criteria are defined.

5. Hardness, microstructure, macrostructure, or additional testing when contractually required.

6. First-article, sample, or third-party inspection at agreed hold points.

7. Machined-component inspection according to the customer drawing when value-added processing is ordered.

A general statement such as “100% UT” is incomplete without the method, scope, sensitivity, and acceptance criteria.

Documentation and Traceability

Available documentation can include:

1. Heat-specific MTR/MTC showing chemistry, mechanical properties, condition, and standard.

2. Heat and lot traceability linked to physical marking, labels, packing lists, and inspection reports.

3. EN 10204 3.1 documentation when contractually required.

4. Dimensional, PMI, UT, hardness, microstructure, or third-party reports when ordered.

5. Certificate of Conformance and customer-specific release documents when agreed.

6. Processing and machining records when they form part of the contract.

Documentation requirements should be confirmed before production because they affect sourcing, inspection, cost, and lead time.

Packaging and Marking

1. Bars can be bundled, wrapped, or packed in export wooden cases according to diameter, length, quantity, finish, and transport method.

2. Ground or polished bars can receive separators and extra surface protection.

3. Moisture-resistant wrapping, secure supports, and end protection can be added when required.

4. Different heats, lots, sizes, and conditions can be separated and clearly identified.

5. Labels can include Grade 5, Ti-6Al-4V, UNS R56400, standard, condition, size, heat number, lot number, quantity, and purchase-order reference.

Buyer Questions

Is Grade 5 bar used in mass-market automobiles?
It is more commonly evaluated for motorsport, performance, prototype, limited-production, and specialized components where weight and performance justify cost and qualification.

Can Grade 5 bar replace steel without redesign?
Not automatically. Titanium has lower density but also lower elastic modulus, different galling and thermal behaviour, and different joining and machining requirements.

Is ASTM B348 enough for an automotive production component?
No. It defines bar material requirements. The finished component may additionally require drawing approval, PPAP-related controls, fatigue testing, first-article inspection, and OEM release.

Can Grade 5 be used for exhaust parts?
Some machined hardware may be evaluated, but exhaust tubes and shells require the correct product form and temperature-specific design. Grade 5 bar should not be promoted as a universal exhaust material.

Can custom machined parts be supplied?
Cutting, turning, milling, drilling, threading, grinding, and other drawing-controlled processing can be reviewed according to quantity, tolerance, inspection, and qualification requirements.

Which documents are available?
Heat-specific MTR/MTC, traceability, EN 10204 3.1 documentation, and ordered inspection reports can be supplied according to the contract.
